The relationship between negative symptoms and self-concepts was consistently significant, even when the contribution of depression was partialed out. In the multivariate analyses, these two symptom clusters explained up to Methane monooxygenase 39% of the variances in our patients’ self-evaluation. Neuropsychological dysfunctions were of relatively subordinate relevance for the patients’ self-concepts. Thus, our results suggest that specific self-esteem at the point of beginning stabilisation of schizophrenia is significantly confounded not only by depression but also by negative symptoms.
