An investigation into the impact of disgust triggered by sexual body fluids was undertaken to determine whether it would decrease sexual arousal, reduce the likelihood of sexual engagement, and amplify disgust toward subsequent erotic stimuli; further, the study examined whether administering ginger would influence these reactions. Two-hundred and forty-seven individuals (average age 2159, SD 252, 122 female) were provided with either ginger or placebo pills and asked to complete behavioral approach tasks, using either sexual or neutral bodily fluids for the tasks. Participants, next, were presented with and responded to questions on erotic stimuli, including nude and seminude pictures of opposite-sex models. Expectedly, the tasks requiring handling of sexual body fluids generated feelings of disgust. Women experiencing elevated disgust related to sexual bodily fluids showed decreased sexual arousal, an effect countered by consuming ginger. Disgust, sparked by sexual body fluids, extended to and encompassed subsequent erotic stimuli. Both men and women who had undertaken the neutral fluid tasks experienced an increase in sexual arousal towards erotic stimuli, influenced by the presence of ginger. These findings provide compelling evidence for disgust's influence on sexual problems, and significantly, suggest that ginger might enhance sexual function through its effect on sexual arousal.

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the agent behind the COVID-19 pandemic, is inflicting severe damage on human well-being. One of the primary ways COVID-19 affects the respiratory tract involves the infection and destruction of ciliated respiratory cells, impairing the crucial mucociliary transport (MCT) function, a vital component of the respiratory system's innate defense, and thereby contributing to viral dissemination. Consequently, medications that augment MCT function might enhance the protective barrier of the airway epithelium, potentially lowering viral replication rates and, ultimately, impacting COVID-19 clinical outcomes favorably. We assessed the activity of five agents, known to elevate MCT levels through different pathways, against SARS-CoV-2 infection. This evaluation used a model of human respiratory epithelial cells, which were terminally differentiated and grown in an air/liquid interface. Three out of five tested mucoactive compounds displayed a notable capacity to restrain SARS-CoV-2 replication. ARINA-1, an exemplary mucoactive agent, suppressed viral replication, hence protecting epithelial cells from injury. Subsequently, using biochemical, genetic, and biophysical strategies, the mechanism of action, particularly its influence on MCT, was investigated further.
